Getting Started

Adafruit Playground is a wonderful and safe place to share your interests with Adafruit's vibrant community of makers and doers. Have a cool project you are working on? Have a bit of code that you think others will find useful? Want to show off your electronics workbench? You have come to the right place.

The goal of Adafruit Playground is to make it as simple as possible to share your work. On the Adafruit Playground users can create Notes. A note is a single-page space where you can document your topic using Adafruit's easy-to-use editor. Notes are like Guides on the Adafruit Learning System but guides are high-fidelity content curated and maintained by Adafuit. Notes are whatever you want them to be. Have fun and be kind.

Once downloaded, you may use the Espressif serial bootloader utility, esptool.py, to upload the binary file to your board. This is an advanced step that may differ between Espressif microcontroller types.

Before you begin, you must locate the serial port used by your board. Information about finding the serial port is located on this page.

Windows and macOS may require drivers to be installed for a particular USB/serial adapter, before a serial port is available. Consult the documentation for your particular device. On macOS, you can also consult System Information’s list of USB devices to identify the manufacturer or device ID when the adapter is plugged in. On Windows, you can use Windows Update or Device Manager to find a driver.

Erase Flash

Running this command will erase ALL the data on your board. All data is replaced with 0xFF bytes!

To ensure you are starting fresh, erase the entire flash by running the following command:

esptool.py --port COM4 erase_flash

Flash WipperSnapper Firmware

Once the flash has been completely erased, the WipperSnapper combined binary file can be written to the ESP's flash chip via the write_flash command. Note that we are using the offset 0x0 during this command since the binary file is a combined binary file containing the memory layout and all binaries:

esptool.py --port COM4 write_flash 0x0 wippersnapper.feather-esp32-v2.1.0.0-beta.61.bin

esptool.py --port COM4 write_flash 0x0 wippersnapper.feather-esp32-v2.1.0.0-beta.61.bin

When this file finishes uploading, press the RESET button on your board and click the "Next Step" button below to get connected.

Full documentation of the commands used by Esptool.py is located here.
